Technologically Integrated Geo-tagged Environmental Research (TIGER)

What are we trying to do?
With TIGER we are mapping out environmental data along the California coast. Currently we are monitoring water quality along a number of different watersheds, air quality, and radiation levels. This should give us an idea of the temporal and spatial variations with a number of environmental metrics. These variations can then be tracked against seasonal variations, longer-term weather patterns, land usages, socioeconomic data, and other factors which may be connected with local environmental conditions.

What are we trying to measure?
The data collection for TIGER is relatively open. We're looking for citizen scientists to collect environmental data (e.g. water quality, soil quality, air quality, radiation levels, sound pollution, light pollution, etc.) at set locations at regular intervals. The general framework being:
Location (GPS coordinates or an address)
Time (Clock time and date)
Measuring equipment
(This is useful for determining the precision / instrumental error of your measurements)
Measurements 1, 2, ....n
Instrumental error on measurements 1, 2, ...n

Sample data
Pilot version of TIGER run at the Environmental Charter High School in Lawndale in 2010.
As an example, the following list is of the data we collected during our pilot program. That specific data can also be found here.

What percentage of the testing site, within 10m of your sampling location, is covered with trash?
What is the predominant form of trash: plastic, paper, metal, organic material, other?
Does it appear as though it rained on the site within the past 24 hours?
Does it appear that there was a surface discharge of water on the site within the past 24 hours?
